A TOTAL of 86 Malaysian students did the nation proud by winning 94 gold medals for their academic excellence at the International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS) 2010 awards ceremony held in Kuala Lumpur recently.

Aside from an increase in gold medals won from last year’s 61 medals, this year’s top students included a triple gold medalist and five double gold medal winners.

Teoh Xiang Yu of SJK(C) Foon Yew bagged a medal each for English, Mathematics and Science.

Meanwhile, the double gold medalists were Khalesa Mohamad Sharif of SK Convent (1) Bukit Nanas, Kuala Lumpur; Michelle Ong Shu Tian (SK Bukit Damansara, Kuala Lumpur); Claryss Kuan (Literacy World English Language Centre, Petaling Jaya); Kalpana Mahendran (SMK Sri Aman, Petaling Jaya); and Muhammad Putera Farid Iskandar (SM Sains Seremban, Negri Sembilan).

Deputy Education Minister Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong, who handed out the medals to students, said that he was proud of their achievements.

“I am also very impressed with the performance of students from rural schools such as those from Tawau, as they proved themselves to be on par with their urban school peers,” he said.

Educational Assessment Australia’s (EAA) Assessment and Research general manager Dr Sofia Kesidou agreed, saying she was pleased with the standard of Malaysian students.

“These students have performed outstandingly well, and are of a world-class standard.

“I think schools can benefit from the assessment as well, as it provides a benchmark to help them improve,” she said.

Ten-year-old Claryss said that her mother had encouraged her to take up the assessment.

“I also wanted to see how good my standard of English and writing were. Winning the medal for Writing was especially exciting, because I want to be both a writer and a forensic scientist when I grow up,” she said.

Organised by Educational Assessment and Testing Services Sdn Bhd (EATS) and EAA, the competition is a global assessment programme that includes participants from countries such as Australia, Singapore, India and South Africa.

The competition provides an avenue for students to test their capabilities in five subjects; namely Computer Skills, Science, Mathematics, English and Writing.

The ICAS also offers diagnostic information for students, parents, and teachers to evaluate academic performance and achievement.

Out of the two million tests taken this year, 44,000 were taken in Malaysia.
