Aims of the Assessment
The aims of the ICAS (Mathematics Assessment) are to:
- Stimulate interest in Mathematics
- Provide an opportunity for all students to gain a measure of their own skills in Mathematics in an external assessment situation
- Monitor individual progress in a range of subject related skills
- Recognise and reward achievement at all levels
- Provide students, parents and teachers with a comprehensive analysis of student performance
- Identify and enable students strengths to be recognised and weaknesses to be remedied.
Format of the papers
There are eight papers:
- Std 3: 45 minutes/40 multiple choice items
- Std 4: 45 minutes/40 multiple choice items
- Std 5: 45 minutes/40 multiple choice items
- Std 6: 1 hour/35 multiple choice items and 5 free response items
- Form 1: 1 hour/35 multiple choice items and 5 free response items
- Form 2: 1 hour/35 multiple choice items and 5 free response items
- Form 3/4: 1 hour/35 multiple choice items and 5 free response items
- Form 5/Lower 6/Upper 6: 1 hour/35 multiple choice items and 5 free response items.
Calculators are not permitted for levels Std 3 to Form 1.
Calculators are required for levels Form 2 to Upper 6.
Each year level is marked as a separate group. The assessment consists of a range multiple choice items and for levels Std 6 to Upper 6 five free response items.
Each question is worth one mark. A student’s total score is the number of correct answers. No marks are deducted for wrong answers.
Who can enter?
The assessment is open to all school students.
All students should sit the paper for the year in which they are currently enrolled.

What does the Assessment test?
The questions cover a wide variety of skills and processes that are an integral part of Mathematics. These include for levels Std 3-Form 1, the four areas of Number, Measurement, Space, and Chance and Data. For levels Form 2-Upper 6, the questions cover the five areas of Number, Algebra, Measurement, Space and Geometry, and Chance and Data.
The assessment is designed for a wide range of student abilities. The questions test the skills and processes appropriate to the year level. The assessment contains some challenging questions for the more able students.
